Our chat is a live Climate Change chat from users all over the world. People who care about Global Warming are coming together and trying to find ways to slow down warming. Climate Change is here to stay - there is no avoiding it. But we can avoid the worst of it if we act now. Over 90% of the worlds scientists now agree that man is partly the cause of global warming. We need to get united, and fight global warming. And regardless of the cause we need to get ready.
Some areas of the world will be harder hit than others. Some island communities will disappear altogether. Animal species are already being displaced, and some will go extinct. Extreme weather will get more and more common - will you be prepared? What will your family do when there is no fresh water?
You trust your doctor to take good care of you; his training is based on science. You trust the manufacturer of your car and your computer and your phone to make good products; their work is based on science. Many of the things you enjoy in your life, are based on science. The discovery of global warming, and the predictions for future Climate Change, are also based on science; the same science you use and benefit from in your everyday life. So when you encounter those who have doubts, and do not understand the science and methodologies involved - help us educate them.
Climate Change science is clear and compelling; global warming exists; its a fact. Our site, ManMadeClimateChange.com, is all about helping the world deal with global warming. We need your help too! We believe, as do 90% of the world's scientists, that greenhouse gases have caused global warming. Warming has gone on since the industrial revolution got into full swing. The main driver of global warming are CO2 emissions. Burning of fossil fuels is the main cause of CO2 emissions. The gas builds up in the atmosphere, changing its properties; more heat is held in, and more sunlight gets absorbed. Glaciers are melting, the poles are melting, and so will Greenland and the permafrost in Siberia. Oceans will rise, up to 7 or 8 feet in some models by the year 2100. The time to act is now. Sea level rise will endanger coastlines and cost untold billions in damages and lost value in real estate. Species will go extinct, resources such as clean water will get scarce, and extreme weather events will get more common.
There is a lot you can do. Talk to your family, you friends, your colleagues. Reduce your consumption of meat, reduce your miles driven in fossil-fuel cars, and conserve resources. Write emails and letters to your congress people to get stronger laws passed. Vote with your money when you support companies that are doing the right thing, including by powering their own operations through renewable energy sources. Vote at election day to support candidates that want to do the right thing.
