Warming Accelerating, Tyson Explaining, People Changing

Picture
Neil deGrasse Tyson
Everywhere you look these days, Neil deGrasse Tyson is talking about science, climate change, and how we all need to think with more clarity.  This week Tyson was talking about Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest Presidents in history - and a Republican.  Lincoln would be appalled at modern Republicans, whose claims to reject science are purely for political gain.    Tyson (rightfully) says, let the scientists give the data, and the politicians can make policy.  You can read more here.

The bottom line: All scientists need to make more effort at communicating.
Some Good News:

Germany is the most progressive country, by far, when it comes to climate change.  Germany has a huge installed base of solar panels, and is working hard in many areas, especially in renewable energy sources.  We re avidly following events in Germany; there are many aspects to 'doing the right thing'.  We just saw a story of a completely waste-free supermarket about to launch in Germany, read more here.  Also there is a photo of this supermarket at the bottom of this article.

Fuel cells are gaining steam.  Fuel cells use natural gas to produce heat, and electricity - with far less emissions.  The
Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) in Dresden is now making a fuel cell the size of domestic heater, that can power a home - producing heat, and up to 1KW of electricity.  This could change everything, if the cost can be reduced.  Fraunhofer is doing testing of the units in 150 homes, and is working to reduce the cost of the unit.  You can read more here.

97% of the world's scientists now support Climate Change.

Billionaire Tom Steyer has put up $2 million to create a fund to help those who are hurt by Climate Change. He hops that others will donate to this fund.  Congressional Republicans, who claim to care about regular people, are not doing anything to help those who are hurt by Climate Change.

The Antarctic ice sheet continues to grow, which no one understands.  There is considerable study underway.

Thursday June 5 was World Environment Day, which was celebrated around the world.  Not as big as Earth Day, but still important and recognized by many.  Maybe everyday should be Evironment Day!

While most people are pessimistic, some optimistic.  While American government policies are a disaster, there are many people making an effort especially in renewables, and startup companies.  People are changing - and that can be powerful.  Here is an interesting article on some of the good trends in fighting global warming.

City planning is accelerating all around the world, to deal with the effects of Climate Change.

But here is Plenty of Bad News Too:

Ever heard of 'Plastiglomerate'?  This is a new kind of rock in our world, where plastic trash on beaches combines with sediment, basaltic lava fragments and organic debris (such as shells) to form a new object, like a rock, and that lasts for centuries.   Future scientists will be able to use this 'plastic rock' material to study our civilization.  Some plastics will melt when warmed and they combine with the natural materials around it.  Plastiglomerate will last from 100's to even thousands of years.  It is a sad commentary on what we are doing to the environment.  People should care.  When you see climate deniers and skeptics complaining about scientists, ask yourself: why don't they care?  You can read more here.

The Texas GOP has called for Republicans to ignore Climate Change.  Maybe we should all just ignore Republicans in the elections?

Jamestown, the oldest English settlement in the US, is about to be swept away by rising waters; part of it already is.  Its further evidence of the rise in sea level.  You can read more here.

Newsweek has reported that the Canadian government has prohibited Meteorologists from talking about Climate Change.   Another form of backward thinking.  In Canada, Meteorologists are listened to more than most scientists.  But Canada has the world's 3rd largest oil reserves, mostly in the form of Tar Sands.  Clearly, Canada has its priorities wrong.  It is surprising in a way as Canada is often seen as a clean, progressive country.

And the worst news, which we have every week, is that CO2 emissions not only continue to happen, but continue to rise.  This is the big driving force behind Global Warming.  We could do something about it - but we need the US Congress to take a leadership position, and they refuse too.  China also needs to take a leadership position in this area, instead of just focusing on economic growth.  They re not mutually exclusive; Germany shows how sensible policies can be found.

Global Warming Effects, Some Good but Mostly Bad:

Picture
Coal Stacks, Czech Republic
A recent poll found that Americans are more fearful of the term "Global Warming" than of "Climate Change".  This is an interesting finding.   In the long term, warming is the largest risk that we face  Climate Change, as a term, covers many things including local microclimates which may have local patterns.  But Global Warming is an overall, world-wide risk and it is increasing every day.

It remains to be seen if the US will step up and become a leader once again.
Climate Change news from around the world:
  • Since Congress has refused to work on Climate Change, President Obama is moving to reduce the limits on emissions from Coal plants.  This is a very important move and one that needs to become law.  Over time, the limits need to be lowered even further - both here, and around the world.  China is now worse than the US when it comes to coal emissions.
  • A recent military report concludes that Climate Change represents a national security risk, that could lead to global "instability and conflict".  In fact for thousands of years, climate issues have led to clashes, wars, and even demise of entire civilizations.   For example, extreme drought around 1200 BC in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean regions led to widespread death, and the displacement of people. Egyptians, Hittites, Canaanites, Cypriots, Minoans, Mycenaeans, Assyrians and Babylonians and 'sea peoples' from the Mediterranean area had conflicts during this time.  Drought and the famine it brings are very destabilizing.  Drought, earthquakes, and other events led to the collapse of civilization in this part of the world, as the Bronze Age was ending.
  • You can become a tree!  There is a neat product from Unabios.com that lets you put your ashes into an urn, from which a tree grows - Maple, Oak, Pine, or othre choices.  Its a beautiful idea, and a way for a person to have an enduring legacy.
  • Climate models predict increased storms near the poles.  A recent study found that very large ocean waves are accelerating the break of the ice in Antarctica.  This seems to be happening more, than in the Arctic or Greenland.   While the large waves can fracture ice even further inland, they are also behind the process
  • Climate Change leads to health risks.  We are seeing that in California already.   Drought there means that underground water supplies are being used more and more - supplies which can be contaminated by pesticides and herbicides.   Plus, drought leads to a drop in agriculture, which in turn hurts the economy of the entire area.
  • The State of Wyoming has rejected new science standards for education because they include education about Climate Change.  This is backwards and hurts our children, and our future.
  • Shell oil now says that Climate Change is a serious issue; they are joining Exxon and Mobile in calling for change.
  • Cities cannot wait for the federal government to take action.  Cities all around the US, and around the world, are forming sustainability policies, and developing plans for dealing with Climate Change, and rising seas.  Coastal cities cannot ignore this risk - even if Congress is completely ignoring it.
  • A new study says that Climate Change will reduce Biodiversity
  • Companies are starting to offer Climate Change Insurance
  • The government of Scotland is preparing national standards for dealing with Climate Change; one of the first countries to do so.  We need more countries to follow suit.  Germany has pledged to be completely run by Renewables by 2050.
  • Invasive species will invade the arctic, as melting continues.
  • On a positive note, Israel no longer has water shortages; they are building desalinization plants.  If this could be run from renewable energy sources, it would be ideal.  Israel has 4  such plants now, and a fifth one is being produced.  Negotiations are underway for more sharing of water resources with Palestinians.
  • How to best reduce emissions in coal plants and other kinds of energy producing plants is not clear; it needs to be cost-effective to be accepted.  Experts do not agree.  Here is a good article in the New York Times.
  • Good article in the Huffington post about the *rate* of species extinction; the rate is increasing.  We are killing off species faster than ever before.  Human activities like strip mining, deforestation, and even pollution are being eclipsed by Climate Change as the mechanism of species extinction.  Some are calling this the next "Great Exinction"; there have been 5 of them before, in all fo Earth's history.  We are causing the sixth.

GOP Skeptic Becomes a Believer

House Republican Changes His Mind and Now Believes in Global Warming

Picture
Rep Michael Grimm (R-NY)
Representative Michael Grimm, (R-NY), has taken a closer look at Climate Change science and has changed his mind.  He used to be a skeptic; now he see's the risk, and accepts Climate Change as a real threat to our way of life.  Grimm simply decided to have an open mind, instead of being controlled by the powerful Republicans in Congress.
He was a skeptic during his 2010 election campaign.  But his Staten Island based district was hit hard by hurricane Sandy, and that can happen again.  Grimm started taking his research more seriously, and he found out just how much data there is on Climate Change.

But it will be an uphill battle.  "It's much bigger than me", he said.  "I don't think that Americans have the will to do it".  It is very rare for a sitting Republican to publicly take a position like this - so we say that Rep. Grimm is a man of principles, and deserves our support and respect.  This is a sign that the debate over Climate Change is changing - for the better.  How often do you hear a politician change their mind? How often are politicians willing to really speak the truth?   Grimm is a courageous man.

The GOP overall is deeply divided on the issue of Climate Change.   Publically, Republicans try to put up a United Front. But you suspect that privately it is a different story. There is considerable pressure on this matter; House Speaker Boehner discourages members from even talking about Climate Change.  With that kind of pressure, its no wonder that Republicans are scared to have an honest debate.

In fact, the Tea Party is the only group in America that still does not understand Climate Change.  In a recent study by the Pew Research Center, only 25% of Tea Party Republicans say there is solid evidence of global warming, compared with 61% of non-Tea Party Republicans.  Overall, in the US, 67% believe in Global Warming, and of the remainder a significant portion are unsure.  So the tide is definitely turning; to find out ore about the Pew survey, click here.  You can find many articles online now about how Republicans fall victim to 'denial behaviour'.  It is unfortunate, and it hurts our country.

What we say, here at ManMadeClimateChange.com, is that if more Republicans would have an open mind, then the world really could change. America could lead the world in this, instead of being one of the big polluters - and driving global warming higher.

Grimm goes on to say, “The mass majority of respected scientists say that it’s conclusive, the evidence is clear. So I don’t think the jury is out,” Grimm told Hayes, a reversal from his previous position on the issue. “I mean there’s no question that, um, you know, the oceans have risen, right? And the climate change part is, is a real part of it.”

Earth Day 2014

The World Celebrates Earth Day

People around the world celebrated Earth Day On April 22.  Over 1 billion people from over 180 nations celebrated the 44th anniversary.

Earth day was started in 1970 and has grown larger than anyone could have expected.  In fact some people credit Earth Day with creating the environmental movement in the US; it led to the creation of the EPA later in 1970, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act.   Earth Day is an inspiration to people around the world, especially for children.

Nasa Image Earth Day 2014
Our website, ManMadeClimateChange.com, made its debut today, Earth Day 2014.

Earth Day this year focus's on cities.  About half of the world's populations live in cities, and cities are growing all the time.  The planet now has many cities with over 5,000,000 inhabitants; this overpopulation is creating many burdens. City managers need to include planning for climate change as well.

We cannot forget our oceans.  With rising acidification, increasing pollution, and over fishing we are putting more and more stress on our oceans.  Oceans are the life-blood of our planet, so we need to take better care of our oceans.

The essence of Earth Day is individual's getting involved; that is the core of the environmental movement at the start, and is still true today.  We all need to get involved in further reducing pollution, and in fighting global warming.

NASA is creating a global selfie collage; they want people all over the world to take a picture of themselves outside, and send it to NASA; indicate where you were when the picture was taken.  Send it on Twitter or Facebook to #GlobalSelfie.

Companies are making announcements today to show they are trying harder to be sustainable.  For example Apple says that they now use Renewable Energy for 94% of their power needs (up from 35% in 2010) and have set a goal to be 100% powered by renewables soon.   Apple also said they will recycle any old Apple device you have; none of them will go to the landfill anymore.   This makes Apple one of the greener companies in the world!

We have a resource for individuals who want to help the environment.  Check back periodically to our website for the page titled, You Are The Change.

Children around the world are making drawings and engaging in activities to celebrate Earth Day.  We need to find a way to keep this momentum all year, and through all ages in order to fight Climate Change.  In every major city around the world there were many events held today to celebrate Earth day, engage in cleanups, and even drives for memberships in environmental organizations.

The flip side of all this is that we are not doing enough to stop Climate Change, and no one seems to have an answer for how to deal with those who are short-sighted and selfish.  In the US, Republicans have all but abandoned the environment - despite the fact that the EPA was created by a Republican (Richard Nixon).  You can learn more about Republican disinterest in the environment from this article by Jay Bookman.

We here at ManMadeClimateChange.com remain optimists.   There are challenges but people do respond when needed.  Education is the key, and we can all help with that.  We want to end this blog post with a picture of Yosemite with a rainbow, released today by the US Government to honor Earth Day.  Yosemite is beautiful, and the rainbow represents hope for the future:
